Game Recap: Robertson's Late Tying Goal Allows Stars To Win A Wild 5-4 OT Game Against Detroit

As of late, I have been able to use the same words on repeat when it comes to game recaps. It was far from perfect. This was the case once again as Dallas used a late tying goal and converted on the power play in overtime for a 5-4 comeback win against the Detroit Red Wings.

“Listen, we are certainly not happy giving up four goals but we certainly are happy that we scored five,” Bowness said with a smile. “We are trying to find ways to win 2-1 or 3-2, and if we can score four or five goals, that’s the object. But we have got to find ways to tighten things up. “There’s too many goals going in our net. We can’t keep giving up four goals on the road.”

The see-saw game featured nine total goals for the second straight night and saw Dallas hold leads of 1-0 and 2-1 while Detroit led 3-2 and then 4-3 late in the third period.

Tyler Bertuzzi led the way for the Wings with one goal and two assists, including the go-ahead goal with just under 6:30 remaining in the third. With the Wings on the power play for the fourth time in the game and the second time in a few-minute span, Bertuzzi tried to slide a pass across the crease to Dylan Larkin, but the pass bounced off the shin pads of Esa Lindell and into the net. The goal was one of five strange goals that found their way into the net in the game.

Ryan Suter and Esa Lindell snuck low-angle shots past Wings netminder Alex Nedelkovic-- some much-needed offense from their blue line, Joel Kiviranta threw a turnaround floating shot from the high slot--his first goal of the season, and Pius Suter scored on a harmless wrister that baffled Braden Holtby on the glove hand side.

Holtby had another game where he was not spectacular (24 saves on 28 shots), but did make a few key saves when things broke down in front of him. While his stats over the last two games are far from ideal, his record is 2-0-0, perfect.

For Dallas, it was production from the usual bunch, as Joe Pavelski recorded three assists, and Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz both tallied one goal and one assist, Robertson tying the game late with Holtby on the bench and Hintz scoring the overtime winner on top of the crease on the power play.

The Stars showed resiliency for the second straight night. After a back-and-forth battle last night in Buffalo, Dallas battled until the very end again tonight, even as their gas tanks started to dip near empty. After the Bertuzzi goal, it would have been easy for them to hang their heads and fade away, but they stuck to it, pushed harder, and scored the game-tying and game-winning goals to stay perfect on the road trip.

“This is a very resilient group,” Rick Bowness said. “Things haven't gone great for us at times this season but no one has hung their heads and no one has felt sorry for themselves. We battled hard last night, and back-to-back games, I give our guys a ton of credit.”

Dallas now gets a well-deserved two-day break amidst the rare double set of back-to-back games. They will fly into Philadelphia tonight, rest tomorrow, skate Sunday, and then take on the Flyers and New Jersey Devils on Monday and Tuesday night.
